Today is the 30th anniversary of Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Ukraine held memorial services.
On April 26, 1986, a nuclear plant in Ukraine triggered a meltdown in the early hours. Deadly clouds of atomic material were spewed in the air and the incidence permanently poisoned swathes of eastern Europe.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko attended a ceremony at the plant and said the issue is not resolved and the country is still a long way off from overcoming those.
Chernobyl sits in the middle of the exclusion zone which is now uninhabitate and the size of Luxembourg.
In the melttown 31 workers and firemen lost their lives and mostly from acute radiation sickness. In the past three decades thousands more have died due to radiation-related illnesses including cancer.
The accident highlighted flaws of Soviet system, which eventually collapsed in 1991. The evacuation order of the government came after 36 hours of the meltdown and this was unaccountable.
More than 300,000 evacuation were done and eventually three million people were affected. The plant was sealed inside an 18-mile exclusion zone. Currently it is just known as Zone.
